LOVE IT OR HATE IT!

The ‘growing up spread’ better known as Marmite was today banned in Denmark because they claim its added vitamins and minerals break food safety laws. The Government there is worried about people consuming more vitamins than their body can deal with naturally, and feels that foods that are enhanced with some vitamins are unnecessary at best and unhelpful at worst. One serving of Marmite apparently contains over 50% of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin B12 and 50% of our Folic Acid needs.

I am no expert but this is does seem to be a bit excessive. Yes Marmite does contain high levels of salt, but one serving is still only around 7% of the total amount of salt that we should eat. So let’s get real and focus on the real issues – getting people to eat a genuinely ‘healthy and balanced diet’ !

So if you are travelling to Denmark this summer, do an expat a big favour and take them a tub of Marmite !

More ways with Marmite!

1) Add one teaspoon short bread mixture for marmite biscuits.

2) Stir in to a mashed potato with grated cheese.

3) Spread onto the top of roast chicken 4) Add a teaspoon to goats cheese and spread onto raw puff pastry. Roll up into strips. Bake at 220C for 10 minutes to make marmite and cheese straws.

5) Stir into cooked rice and serve with your Sunday roast.
