I am writing in response to the letter by Aniello Capone (Name street after Margaret Thatcher’, Your Views, June 19).

In Mrs T’s unique style: No! No! No!

The hospital in Finchley, built circa 1908, was renamed Finchley Memorial Hospital after The Great War in memory of all our loved ones who were members of the armed forces and who were killed while fighting for their king, their fellow country men and their country.

We, in Finchley, do not have a dedicated war memorial with the names of all the brave local personnel from the First World War and Second World War who volunteered to go and fight for our freedom.

Many of us lost dear family members – my maternal grandfather and two great uncles made the ultimate sacrifice in the Great War. Those of us who lived and were brought up in this area during the Second World War know the hardships suffered during war. My father, a volunteer, was killed in the Battle of the Atlantic in the Second World War.

Following the First World War and Second World War, it was public, war widows and local dignitaries who organised and fundraised for local war memorials. Unfortunately, here in Finchley, although we do have the plaque at North Finchley and the Finchley Memorial name, it would appear that there were insufficient funds for a dedicated war memorial to be constructed.

It is not too late, I should like to see a dedicated war memorial here in Finchley, recording the names of all those brave individuals who fought and died for us. If it was not for their ultimate sacrifice there may not even be a Finchley today.

I have researched the names of more than 400 members of the armed services from Finchley who were killed in the Second World War. Four of these names were brothers, the sons of a local Finchley GP, one of whom received the Victoria Cross, yet their names do not appear on a local war memorial because we have not got one.

The research is done, it is funding that is now required. Does anyone have any ideas about fundraising for this worthiest of causes?

At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.

Change the name of Finchley Memorial Hospital to Mrs T – Never! Never! Never!
