I didn’t respond to a letter written suggesting that either a street or Finchley Memorial Hospital should be named after Margaret Thatcher because I honestly thought it was a joke, especially as there was even a hint that she was worthy of being made a saint (‘Name street after Margaret Thatcher’, Your Views, June 19).

However, it seems it may have been a serious suggestion so I would say to describe Mrs T as “Britain’s greatest daughter” and someone who deserved “a permanent place in our hearts” could be considered a highly contentious remark by some.

Let’s not forget that the song The Wicked Witch is Dead shot to the top of the charts at the time of her death – make of that what you will.

It’s rarely a good idea to name streets after controversial politicians. For some time the word ‘No’ often appeared before the word ‘Way’ when a slip road in Barnet was named Sydney Chapman Way after the ex-MP for Barnet. I hope therefore the council will think carefully before making a decision on the matter. Remember a statue of the Iron Lady has already had her head chopped off before being reinstated in safer premises.
