I would like to highlight the tremendous generosity of the people of Finchley, particularly those who were shopping in the North Finchley Waitrose superstore on Saturday, June 28.

The management of Waitrose kindly allowed cadets of 393 (Finchley) Squadron, Air Training Corps, to raise funds for a much-needed minibus by packing customers’ bags at their store. Thanks to the kind-hearted charity of the shoppers we were able to collect the brilliant sum of £840.

The squadron is in need of a reliable minibus to allow us to provide the broad range of interesting, fun and challenging activities enjoyed by our cadets, which can take us all over London and the south east, and even Europe. Our activities allow us to deliver the Air Training Corps’ aims, which include: developing qualities of leadership and good citizenship; encouraging the spirit of adventure; and promoting a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force.

Our ambitious target is to raise the sum of £25,000 towards the purchase of a good-quality minibus and the money collected on June 28 will provide a much-appreciated addition to our fund. In common with most youth groups, purchases such as these are totally self-funded. We are reliant on the efforts of the squadron’s committee, staff and cadets to earn the money for the minibus fund, plus any donations from charitable organisations and individuals.

I would again like to express my thanks to the people of Finchley, the management and staff at Waitrose North Finchley, and to the cadets for all their hard work.
