Barnet Borough Council continues to fail to act on existing legislation to fine drivers who leave their engines idling when parked.
Dozens of vans, lorries, buses and cars – diesel and petrol – needlessly add to the high pollution levels recorded in this borough. North Finchley High Road, for example, has one of the highest diesel pollution levels in Europe, second only to Oxford Street or Marylebone Road.
Boris Johnson, as Mayor of London, should keep his one-time promise of a tough by-law making idling of vehicle engines an offence, punishable by a £60 penalty charge.
It is not an issue of just picking on diesel drivers but one of improving public health and lessening peoples’ chances of dying prematurely from respiratory diseases. And don’t forget the reduction in greenhouse gases and global warming.
