Mr Keith Martin is seriously misinformed about the Falklands conflict of 1982 if he thinks it was an “illegal war” on Great Britain’s part (‘She was indeed a forceful lady’, Your Views, September 18).

The only act ever condemned by the United Nations Security Council was the unprovoked Argentinian invasion, while the relevant UN resolution specifically recognised the UK’s right of self-defence.

Britain’s position attracted overwhelming international support at the time. Moreover, the parliamentary spokesmen of the Labour, Liberal and Social Democratic parties all publicly approved the dispatch of the naval task force which recovered the islands, and no responsible political leader or commentator ever dreamed of calling that action “illegal”.

In fact, the war for the Falklands was probably the only one in my own or Mr Martin’s lifetime which was transparently a “just war”.
