Your issue of September 25 highlights some contrasting attitudes to the priorities facing Barnet Borough Council. There is the leader’s panel, appointed to determine the accusation of unethical actions by the Mayor, and the council’s current consultation on library services.

Bob Jacobson’s letter (‘Miscarriage of justice by panel’, Your Views, September 25) puts it thus: “Another simple and stupendous miscarriage of justice occurred at Hendon Town Hall.”

Richard Cornelius’s take on libraries is (‘Barnet’s libraries could be the next casualty’, Barnet &Potters Bar Times, September 25): “The library service budget will have to be viewed in the context of the savings target already unanimously accepted by the committee.” Nevertheless, it is now out for wider discussion.

I commend to readers the series of monthly Any Questions debates at Friern Barnet Community Library, the next of which is on Friday, October 17 at 7pm. The panel will be MP Theresa Villiers, parliamentary candidate Sarah Sackman and Poppy of the Green Party. These debates have been described as “this vital democratic forum”, and are indeed an informed platform for public debate, with none of the constraints on free speech imposed at council meetings and area forums.

Recent debates have dealt with questions on the HS2 rail plans, TTIP international trade agreements and the place of ethics in Barnet Council meetings.

Questions in advance to keith.martin18@btinternet.com or at the library on the night.
