Regarding the now voted down proposal to reduce funding to nurseries in Barnet (‘Campaigners ecstatic over survival of nursery’, Times Series, November 13).

It was sacrilege to even propose such a cut in funding that could have threatened the future of the nursery schools.

They are a vital component in children’s education. Both my sons went to Brookhill Nursery School in East Barnet, when they were both three.

If it were not for Brookhill Nursery School and Barnet Borough Council’s nursery provision, I would not have been able to return to work after having my children.

It prepared both of my sons for primary school at Danegrove in East Barnet.

There are great teachers throughout Barnet.

I am very pleased that one of my sons is now a Labour councillor, who voted against this proposal that would have restricted other children the privilege that he enjoyed — a high-quality council- run local nursery.

My other son is now studying for a masters degree in advanced physics.

It is vitally important to keep nursery schools open, as well as our local libraries.

Creating a choice between the two, as the local Conservatives have done is a false choice.

Kids need the best academic grounding possible. Not enough children enter primary school with the basic skills.

I am grateful to Brookhill and to its former headteacher Mrs Draper. Both my boys loved their time there and I’m sure I am not alone in my admiration.
