There is still too much evidence of luxury homes being built but nothing affordable to first-time buyers who can barely afford to rent, let alone buy.
Margaret Thatcher started the sell-off of much social housing whereby tenants were given the right to buy at cheap prices. What’s happened since, in many cases, is they are offered to let but at rent not affordable to the average person. It’s all wrong. Young people can no longer afford to live in many areas.
This also explains why more social service care is required for the elderly as families have to move away so far, leaving no trusty help the vulnerable need.
As far as social housing goes, no one should be able to buy them. Give others a chance.
However, this should not give the right for anyone to be forced out because a parent has died, leaving a spare room.
