Ronnie Biggs' sentence could have been short

2:05pm Friday 26th June 2009

In response to your report on train robber Ronnie Biggs possibly moving into a Barnet care home.

I am quite aware of the statement Geoffrey Alderman wrote that the taxpayer should not pick up the bill.

I am not condoning what Ronnie Biggs did, but if the proceeds of the crime committed was not Government money, he would not have received a 30-year sentence but a possible seven or eight-year stretch, therefore he would not have been on the run.

People today commit the most heinous crimes for much smalller sentences. There has to be a balance.
