I agree more should be done to promote the benefits of healthy living to children (‘Healthy minds leads to healthy attitudes’, Times Series, January 21).

So what would get them and adults alike motivated? How about a full-size leisure centre containing a 33-metre swimming pool, specially adapted gym with equipment sized for children to use (not unlike that at the Furzfield Centre, in Potters Bar), and an adults gym, so mum and dad can get some exercise at the same time?

New Barnet lacks fundamental facilities.

A gym in a school that cannot be used until the end of the school day should not even fall into the category of leisure venture, as indicated in the Local Framework Document.

A leisure centre should be accessible throughout the day and evening.

Society and communities are evolving in many different ways and leisure and recreation areas must follow suit and keep pace.

Yes, we need to keep our big green park spaces, but some of our parks are under used and some radical thinking could see these spaces bought up to the 21st Century.

One idea that shows design and thought to this is that of the Vision for New Barnet (www. newbarnet. org.uk). It has been designed by highly respected architects and landscapers incorporating suggestions from the community.
