Residents in many districts across the borough are increasingly angry their pleas for increased road safety measures near their homes and schools have fallen on deaf ears.
Barnet Green Party has decided to address the issue by proposing a 20mph speed limit on all residential and shopping streets in the borough.
As the East Finchley Village Residents Association has been saying, Church Lane clearly merits a 20mph limit, because of its narrow hump-back bridge, its proximity to schools and several awkward junctions.
However, many other streets also need a lower speed limit.
Research shows a 20mph limit is better observed and more effective if it covers a whole neighbourhood zone rather than single streets here or there, as people get in the habit of driving at the slower speed.
Also, costs of signs and enforcements measures are proportionately less for a wide zone.
