With reference to the letter “Democracy no longer exists” on planning and licensing issues in Barnet (Your Views, September 29).

Town planning exists to protect people and their environment.

Planning depends upon meaningful public consultation and participation.Without proper public consultation, town planning does not exist.

People and planning should trump autocratic party politics.

It would appear the leadership of Barnet is currently in breach of democracy and town planning and this is not restricted to the borough of Barnet.

Take for example the flawed proposal for a huge waste plant at Pinkham Way N11, which if carried out would seriously damage the protection and environment of thousands of residents and many schools and colleges within at least three kilometres of the proposed site.

The authorities may have thought they could “beat their neighbours out of doors” by exporting this monstrous proposal to densely populated Haringey without recognising the damage which would also be caused also to Coppetts ward and residents of Barnet, Haringey and Enfield.

Consequently, teamwork and an urgent common policy against this flawed waste plant should be established between Theresa Villiers MP and the councillors of Coppetts Ward.

How will the 63 councillors of Barnet oppose a waste plant at Pinkham Way and restore democracy and town planning for the borough?
