Get this show on the road

First published in Readers' Letters

I agree with Ted Kelly’s sentiments regarding Saracens’ plans to refurbish a dilapidated, old-fashioned stadium so that not only Saracens, but many other clubs, schools and members of the general public can use it all the year round, (‘An offer too good to miss, Your Views, October 6) The residents of Mill Hill should support this venture wholeheartedly.

Obviously, there will be problems — there always are — but they will not be insurmountable and Saracens will have done their homework covering every eventuality that can arise.

So come on residents of Mill Hill, write to Barnet Council and MPs and let’s get this show on the road as soon as possible.

Oh dear, another "reader's letter" from the Saracens PR machine. You really should vary the style a little. But let's be frank - the GLA and Transport for London have severe reservations, and won't let this flawed scheme through as it stands, or possibly ever. There's weeks if not months of further work and discussions before any decision. Meanwhile Saracens show their commitment to Mill Hill and Barnet by playing perhaps their most important match of the year in South Africa! Why? How does that benefit the Barnet community? Fans abandoned (at least those who can't or don't want to go to South Africa), their case for Copthall perhaps fatally undermined, why? What for? This bad scheme for our precious Green Belt publicly-owned land, used intensively NOW by the whole community should not be allowed!
