March for new football stadium
Around 500 people joined a march organised by the Keep Barnet Alive (KBA) campaign to highlight Barnet FC's need for a new stadium. The march took place on Monday afternoon, following the club's 1-0 victory over Mansfield Town.
The parade was rescheduled from April 8, when Barnet Council said it could not legally allow the use of council property for political purposes ahead of the council elections on May 4.
Bees supporters marched from Underhill stadium, in Barnet Lane, up Barnet Hill into the town centre, round the Spires Shopping Centre and back down High Street to the football ground.
KBA Chairwoman Janet Matthewson said: "It went really well and we got a good response from people. We had representatives from other groups joining us. I think there were about 800 people. You can never be too sure how many will turn up. Some went up the hill, had a drink in the pub and then walked back down again later."
Ms Matthewson said the group had been surprised to see a Conservative councillor taking photos of the march.
Councillor Daniel Hope, who represents Brunswick Park ward but is campaigning to be re-elected in Underhill ward, said he had heard the KBA supporters chanting while he was canvassing in the area.
"There were not that many people there, I would say no more than a couple of hundred. I was at the Old Court House in Wood Street checking on some graffiti and taking some pictures. When I heard the march I went along to see what was going on. I took a picture for posterity."
Barnet police confirmed the march passed off peacefully, and calculated that the number of people taking part was around 500.
