Hendon’s recent upturn in form continued as they kept their third clean sheet in four matches to overcome Kingstonian 1-0 in the Ryman Premier Division.

The Greens’ match-winner was teenager Jack Connors who struck shortly before the interval to seal victory.

Hendon boss Gary McCann was pleased with his side’s performance in tricky conditions at Vale Farm.

"This was a big three points for us and on a very difficult pitch," the Greens manager explained. "I think we played the conditions much better than Kingstonian.

"What pleased me most was that we learned from our mistakes. I stressed the importance of not making mistakes and keeping it simple. If that meant knocking the ball longer then that is what we had to do, and we did it well.

"It may not have been very pretty, but it got us the result and that is the important thing."

The Greens had started the contest strongly and almost went ahead in the opening minutes when Lee O’Leary headed a Jack Connors cross past the visitor’s goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey.

However, Adam Green scrambled the ball clear from a few yards in front of the goal line.

After a bright first ten minutes, the hosts were pushed back into their own half by Kingstonian and they would have gone ahead had Berkley Laurencin not produced a good stop to deny James Fisher.

Andre McCollin then struck the post for the K’s and Howard Hall fired the rebound over the crossbar.

Despite being under great pressure for around half an hour, Hendon managed to go ahead just before the break as Connors broke through and confidently fired the Greens ahead.

The second period was a tighter affair and fewer chances were created. Kingstonian’s hopes of grabbing an equaliser were dented in the 64th minute as Wade Small was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards.

Sean Sonner came close to scoring a second for Hendon but his curling effort hit the crossbar before Belal Aite-Ouakrim forced Tolfrey into a good stop.

However, the Greens saw out the game comfortable to claim an important three points in their battle against relegation.

In 1960, Hendon defeated Kingstonian 2-1 in the Amateur Cup final. If anyone has footage of this match contact bmerrygold1@btinternet.com.
