Wingate & Finchley secured a vital 2-1 win away at Ryman Premier Division relegation rivals Carshalton Athletic on Tuesday.
The Blues started on the front foot and Anthony Thomas tested the home keeper with a driven low shot from 20 yards that was saved by Nick Hamann.
Daniel Brown then hooked a first-time effort wide of the post and the Wingate pressure continued until they went ahead in the 38th minute.
Thomas’ free-kick into the penalty area was met by Ahmet Rifat and he flicked the ball past Hamann from 12-yards.
Despite going ahead Wingate continued to push forward. John Christian sent an effort wide from distance before Andre Scarlett added a second goal with a low shot into the corner.
Six minutes after the break, Athletic pulled a goal back after Nathaniel Pinney toe-poked a strike in from the edge of the box.
Knowing they needed another goal to be assured of victory the Blues attacked. Thomas sent a half-volley over and Christian had a shot just miss the post.
Athletic had a goal ruled out for a foul with 15 minutes remaining and despite mounting late pressure, they were unable to find the equaliser and Wingate held on for victory.
