Former Arsenal greats played alongside double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah at Underhill yesterday as a Gunners Legends side took on a World Refugee Internally Displaced People XI in support of World Refugee Day.

Ian Wright, Ray Parlour and Tony Adams were the stand-out names in the Arsenal squad which was managed by Farah.

Fabrice Muamba took charge of the World Refugee Internally Displaced People side which included representatives from refugee organisation Freedom From Torture.

An entertaining contest was played out in front of a 3,600 strong crowd at Underhill but those Gunners fans in attendance saw their former players go behind in the first half as Vurghun Hasanzade slotted home from close range.

The closest the Arsenal Legends came to equalising in the opening 45 minutes came from a very unlikely source.

The ball was not cleared on the edge of the World Refugee’s penalty area and referee Mark Halsey turned and shot just wide before giving a goal kick.

The second period saw plenty of chances created by the Gunners and they finally drew level when Omer Riza coolly rounded the goalkeeper and passed the ball into an empty net.

Wright almost put the Gunners ahead with a lob but his effort was saved and Parlour struck the post. Farah brought himself on for the final 15 minutes but couldn’t help his Arsenal side find a winner.

The charity game was organised by ex-England and Arsenal captain Adams and actor Tom Watt. Proceeds from the match, which was sponsored by the European Azerbaijan Society, will go to The Refugee Council.
