Mark McCall says England boss Stuart Lancaster trusts Saracens to keep players fresh during the season
Director of rugby Mark McCall says he has a good relationship with Stuart Lancaster and insists the England boss trusts Saracens to keep international players fresh during the season.
Sarries initially had six players called up to the England squad with Joel Tomkins, Alex Goode, Chris Ashton, Owen Farrell, Billy Vunipola, Mako Vunipola all selected. Goode was released back to Sarries last week.
Farrell has played in all Saracens' matches this season on the back of a summer Lions tour to Australia and McCall admits he planned to give his fly-half more rest.
"It's not what we wanted," McCall said. "The plan had been for Owen to come back in game three of the Premiership.
"We rested him for the Wasps week – he didn’t train at all, he just turned up for the match and we brought him on at half-time."
"Stuart and I talk about him a lot and with Charlie coming back from injury, Owen will be rested a lot after the autumn internationals so he arrives at Six Nation time fresh and rested."
McCall added: "Stuart is very sensible in all of this, he trusts the club.
"England can demand you rest a player for a certain period of time but Stuart understands Owen's welfare and other internationals' welfare are paramount for us as well and we don’t intend to damage that."
