Martin Allen says his Barnet players are overweight and is adamant those who remain with the Bees during the summer will need to trim up and be fitter next season.

At the start of Barnet’s Skrill Premier campaign the target was promotion. The club fell short of finishing in the top-five however and ended in eighth place.

Allen returned to Barnet in March and took charge of the Bees’ final eight league matches. They were only beaten once during that time but the Barnet head coach will keep the players working over the coming weeks.

“They’re overweight and their body fat percentages are too high,” he said. “They need to get that down, trim up and be fit for when they return to pre-season training.

“The players need to step up to the plate so when we start pre-season on July 3 they are ready to go.

“They’ve been tested this week for their weight and body fat and it has got to come down. It’s got to be a fitter squad next season.”

Barnet ended their Skrill Premier campaign on Saturday with an entertaining 3-3 draw at Lincoln City.

Ahmed Abdulla converted a penalty to put the Bees ahead but the Imps took control and scored three times in succession through Nat Brown, Kris Bright and Ben Tomlinson.

Young winger Iffy Allen reduced the deficit as he scored his first Bees goal. A group of Lincoln fans invaded the pitch before full time and the Barnet players were taken to the dressing room by Allen.

When play resumed, eight minutes were added. With two minutes of the season remaining, Jake Hyde struck an equaliser to earn the Bees a share of the points.

Allen praised the majority of the Lincoln support after the game but said those who came onto the pitch should be banned.

“I stand by my decision to take the players off the pitch because their safety, first and foremost, is paramount,” he said.

“Those fans spoilt it for Lincoln City. Credit to our lads to keep on going and we had half a dozen chances to get the equaliser beforehand.

“But the whole tempo and the atmosphere in the stadium changed. The break helped us, it didn’t help them.

“I think those supporters should be banned, it’s only a few but it was enough to put a dark finish on the end of the game.”

While Barnet’s season only ended on Saturday, Allen is already focused on building a squad for the 2014/2015 campaign.

"I’ll have a break but I won’t settle until we have a decent squad of players. I am only looking for 18 players in the squad because you can only have five subs,” Allen said.

“My ways will be implemented straight away. We’ll see a difference and with the new players we’ll bring into the club, we’ll be a strong unit.”
