Saracens captain Steve Borthwick is '50-50' for Saturday's Heineken Cup final after Mark McCall revealed he has not trained this week.

The 34-year-old lock suffered a 'significant pectoral injury in Saracens' 31-17 Premiership semi-final win over Harlequins last weekend.

Borthwick has also announced his intention to retire at the end of the campaign and injury could prevent the former England captain from lifting either the Heineken Cup or Premiership trophy.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, McCall said: "He's got a chance. He hasn't trained yet and there's a few things he's got to do before he's declared fit, but we'll make a firm decision on Thursday.

"We wouldn't play him unless he's proven he can play, functionally he's got to be strong enough to play.

"We wouldn't gamble at all with him. He's got a significant injury to his pectoral muscle."

McCall also confirmed the former Bath player will not play in next weekend's Premiership final against Northampton Saints at Twickenham if he misses Saturday's Heineken Cup final in Cardiff.

Alistair Hargreaves and Mouritz Botha are expected to start if Borthwhick is unavailable for selection on Saturday.
