Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous has revealed he is looking to sell Underhill - the club's home of 106 years until last season.

The Bees left Underhill at the end of the 2012/13 campaign and moved to their current premises at The Hive in Cannons Park ahead of the 2013/14 season.

Super League side London Broncos currently train at Underhill and their Under-19s play their home fixtures at the stadium as well.

However, speaking to the club's website, Kleanthous admitted he is seeking to sell Underhill with the intention of building a new 10,000 seater stadium - ideally within Barnet - in the future.

“We are now looking to sell the site," said Kleanthous. "We have had Broncos using the facilities keeping it ticking over but it is clearly deteriorating fast and the cost of maintaining the old stadium seems disproportionate.

"I have waited until after the local elections to see whether the Back to Barnet campaign would have any success and to give local supporters every opportunity to influence the councillors looking to get elected but have not seen much activity," he added.

Kleanthous had been keen to move Barnet from Underhill for a number of years due to the poor facilities but the Bees eventually left following a dispute with Barnet Council over the lease of the stadium, having also missed out on moving to Barnet Copthall in favour of Saracens.

Asked how long Barnet would remain at The Hive - which had originally been built as a training facility - Kleanthous said: “As long as is necessary until I can find a new site, preferably in Barnet, to build a modern new 10,000 seated stadium which has always been my stated goal.”
