Finchley were comfortably beaten by 46 runs at Brondesbury in the Middlesex League Premier League after a poor batting display on Saturday.

The visitors won the toss and asked Brondesbury to bat first, with the hosts putting up 156 for nine from 66 overs.

A big knock of 65 from Will Vanderspar carried the hosts’ innings, with Tommy Ricketts and John Fosbraey the next highest scorers on 16.

Hassan Khan took four for 41 for the hosts, whilst Tilan Wijesinghe weighed in with three for 38.

The Finchley reply got off to a strong start, with openers Mush Bukhari (50) and Francois Haasbroek (32) leading the way for the visitors.

However, the rest of the side were unable to follow their lead and managed just 23 between them as Finchley ended up all out for 110.

Sam Smith was the stand-out bowler for the hosts, taking four wickets for just 15 runs. Palash Joshi claimed four for 34.

The result leaves Finchley seventh in the league standings after four matches.

Stanmore got their season up-and-running with a convincing 74-run win at home to Hampstead on Saturday.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bowl first but could not stem the tide as Stanmore reached 219 for eight.

Kunal Mehta reached 68 before being run out, with Stevie Eskinazi (47) and Kush Patel (46) making important contributions to the total.

Liam Hughes was the most effective Hampstead bowler, taking two for 45.

In response, Hampstead were all out for 145.

Mubasher Hassan and Ben Scott both hit 59 and Mukesh Butt enjoyed a profitable spell with the ball, taking four for 52, including four maidens in his 14 overs.

Victory moves Stanmore into sixth place.

In the Saracens Herts Premier Division, Potters Bar lost at Harpenden by 72 runs.

The away side won the toss and opted to bowl first, removing Harpenden for 202.

James Latham led the way with a knock of 88, ably supported by Dan Wightman (23) and Simon White (22).

James Ilot was the star man with the ball for Potters Bar, taking four for 27 from nine overs.

After 25 from opener Chris Swainland, the visitors’ response faltered somewhat.

Don Manuwelge scored 29 before being trapped leg before wicket as Potters Bar slumped to 130 for nine in their 50 overs.

Totteridge Millhillians fell to a 173-run defeat at home to Hertford in the Championship thanks to a stunning 176-run knock by Steve Gale.

Batting first, the visitors posted an enormous 338 for two, with Gale’s unbeaten 176 leading the way.

Dean Bermingham and Shaun O’Brien took the two wickets for the hosts.

In reply, Totteridge were bowled out for 165.

Justin le Fort hit 84 and Steve Selwood 37 but the hosts fell well short.

Adam Carlson claimed four wickets for 20 and Michael Bailey three for 23 as the visitors closed out victory.

In the Championship, Old Finchleians won by seven wickets at Hoddesdon.

The visitors won the toss and bowled first, restricting the hosts to 138 for eight.

Sam Davis top-scored with a knock of 61 – one of just three Hoddesdon bowlers to reach double figures.

Hardik Savani was the most dangerous bowler for Finchleians, taking three for 27.

With seven wickets in hand, Old Finchleians reached their target to wrap up the win.

Chetan Depala Jnr hit 46 to top-score for the visitors, with opener Rachit Thakkar scoring 38.

Jamie Curtis (two for 32) and Adam Sturdy (one for 32) took the only wickets.

Old Elizabethans won by seven wickets at Hertford Seconds in Division Three to continue their good form.

The visitors got off to a good start with James Heavey winning the toss and asking the opposition to bat.

Some early loose bowling was punished by the Hertford batsman, who hit a few boundaries before 17-year-old Dominic Goring (two for 21) took the first wicket to slow the scoring slightly.

At 33-1, Nick Jones (three for 16) and Nav Akhtar (four for 12) applied the pressure with five consecutive maidens drawing loose shots.

The next seven wickets fell for only 14 runs, leaving the hosts struggling on 57 for nine as Jones and Akhtar continued to turn the screw.

Despite adding 29 for the last wicket, 86 all out was a beatable target for the visitors.

Skipper Heavey (20) led the charge in an aggressive manner, racing to 20 from his first two overs, including two fours. Despite being bowled by a good yorker, the damage was done.

Following the loss of two more wickets, Paul Lissowski (26 not out) and Saqib Akhtar (27 not out) saw the side home to a comfortable victory.

Speaking afterwards, Heavey said: “I’m delighted with the way our young team is progressing and the potential is phenomenal, especially with the younger players continuing to come through.”

Mill Hill Village secured a dramatic victory from the final ball of their home match against St Albans Thirds in Division Seven.

Asked to bat first on a slow, lifeless, wicket, the Village made use of their full 53 overs, scoring 211 for eight.

Dan Potter scored 90 from the opening spot before getting run out just short of a deserved maiden century.

Support from Felix Charles (27) and a late onslaught from Majid Asif (46) ensured a more than competitive total.

In reply, St Albans reached 37 without loss in the seventh over.

Captain David Overton (two for 44) broke the deadlock before a rare bowling outing for Potter saw him pick up two quick wickets.

It was the Village spinners who ripped the heart out of the hosts’ middle order with Graeme Burton (four for 47) the pick.

The ninth wicket fell with the score at 144 and with eight overs still remaining in the match, victory looked assured.

But the St Albans skipper found an equally stubborn batting ally at number 11 and the overs and balls ticked by, reducing the hosts’ chances of victory.

However, a probing final over by Majid Asif put the batsmen on edge and on the final ball of the match, a straight delivery hit the pad with no shot offered and the umpire upheld a vociferous leg before wicket appeal to seal the victory.

Three successive 30-point wins leaves Mill Hill Village top of the table.
