Barnet have signed midfielder Sam Togwell ahead of the 2014/15 season after impressing on trial.

The 29-year-old spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers from Chesterfield and boasts more than 300 matches in the Football League with a number of clubs.

Togwell came on as a half-time substitute at Margate on Tuesday night and featured from the start as Barnet lost 1-0 to Wycombe Wanderers in their final pre-season friendly this afternoon.

Speaking to the club's website, Togwell said: “I’m really pleased. I’ve been here since Monday and have settled in really well. The training has gone well and everybody looks really fit.

“Barnet are definitely a club that is going in the right direction. It is a good group of lads and I’m sure that we will do well this season.”

Head coach Martin Allen added: “Sam is a good, strong, what I suppose you could describe as an old-fashioned central midfield player.

“He did very well during his loan at Wycombe last year and I’ve seen him play lots of times throughout his career. He brings both leadership and experience and I’m delighted that he has joined.”

Born in Beaconsfield, Togwell began his professional career at Crystal Palace but made just one substitute appearance in the league for the Eagles before departing for Barnsley in 2006.

The 5ft 11in defensive-minded midfielder took in loan spells with Oxford United, Northampton Town and Port Vale before joining the Tykes on a free transfer.

After two years in Yorkshire, Togwell moved further north to join Scunthorpe United. It was at Glanford Park where the comative midfielder really began to establish himself, making 182 appearances for the Iron in all competitions.

It was with the Lincolnshire outfit Togwell won the first promotion of his career, helping Scunny into the Championship in 2009 via the League One play-offs.

Two years in the second tier came to an end in 2011, with Togwell spending one more season with Scunny in League One.

Signed by Chesterfield in 2012, Togwell established himself as a regular with the Spireites in his first season at the club before moving out on loan to Wycombe Wanderers last term.

Togwell returned to the Proact Stadium in time to make his tenth appearance of the season and help his parent club lift the League Two title on the final day of the season.

The Times Series understands Gavin Mahon, who had been in talks over a contract with the Bees earlier in the week, has been made an offer by another club.
