Barnet were knocked off the top of the Conference by Lincoln City on Saturday – an achievement made more impressive by the fact the Lincoln players had to drive to The Hive after the club’s coach failed to show up.

The Bees were beaten 2-1 by Gary Simpson’s Imps, who took control of the game with two first-half goals, despite the fact the players had driven the 132 miles from Sincil Bank to The Hive.

Owing to the lack of room to carry equipment, essentials such as the tactics board were left behind; with manager Simpson forced to use the lid of a kit bin and a bag of Jelly Babies to divulge his tactical plan for the match.

And a picture of Simpson outlining his tactics for the fixture went viral after forward Ben Tomlinson tweeted a picture.

Speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, Simpson said: "We turned up in drips and drabs a little bit, but we all got down.

"It wasn't the best situation to be in, especially when you are going to the league leaders that haven't conceded a goal, and had got off to an absolutely unbelievable start."

Asked if he would consider the unorthodox approach to preparing his team again, he said: "If we can keep winning I will do whatever is necessary.”

Lincoln City are looking into why the team's coach did not show up but say it was through no fault of their own.

Martin Allen’s side have had travel problems of their own this season, arriving at Chester just 35 minutes before kick-off on the opening day of the season, before going on to win 5-0.
