Four swimmers from Barnet Copthall Swimming Club met 2008 double Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Adlington OBE at the Swim Britain event at the weekend.

The four youngsters – Declan Neilson, ten, Archie Price, 11, and brothers 12-year-old Bartosz and Peter Soczewka, nine, were taking part in the annual event at the 50m outdoor London Fields Lido in east London.

Adlington, who won two golds at the Beijing Games, gave the youngsters advice on swimming as well as signing autographs and their club shirts.

Adlington clearly inspired the young quartet, who swim up to eight times a week at Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre, as they completed the 4x1km relay, finishing in second place out of 16 teams in a time of 1.05.35.

Meanwhile, the swimmers’ parents, including three dads and a mum, finished a little way behind with a time of 1.27.08, but it was enough to grab a respectable fourth place in their event at the pool.
