Barnet midfielder Sam Togwell felt there was only one side who would win after the Bees equalised against Macclesfield Town before going on to triumph 3-1 on Saturday.

Martin Allen’s side had made up for a below-par first 45 at Bristol Rovers on Tuesday with a strong start against the Silkmen, but fell behind when Adriano Moke found the bottom corner of Graham Stack’s net with unerring precision four minutes before the break.

The hosts rallied after the break though and dug out an equaliser when Andy Yiadom converted Charlie MacDonald’s cross. John Akinde powered home a header from a Luisma Villa free kick three minutes later, and in the dying minutes, Curtis Weston chipped home the third on the break.

Reflecting on the turnaround, Togwell opined: “The first one was important to get the crowd on our side. They had been getting frustrated the longer it went on, it comes onto the pitch as well, so it was a well-worked goal and as soon as we got that there was only one team that was going to win.

“It was a kick in the teeth [to go behind] because I think they only had two shots; one hit the post with a deflection and the other has gone through players into the bottom corner. We had plenty of good areas and the keeper made a few good saves.”

He added: “It was a good game plan in the second half for us. It could not have got any better; getting the early goal, getting the lead, then we could defend deep and we made the subs to affect the game and get the third on the counter. All game we felt comfortable.”

And like his manager, Togwell is reluctant to read too much into the Bees’ lofty position in the Conference standings, which sees them sit eight points clear of Grimsby Town in second place.

“For us it is another game chalked off and we are another game closer to the end of the season and to get our points tally up,” said the former Wycombe Wanderer midfielder.

It was a straight red card against his former employers in the FA Cup first round which saw Togwell miss three league fixtures, much to the annoyance of the 30-year-old.

“It was really frustrating because there were a few big games in there as well. I think Torquay at home, Woking away; those are games you want to play in,” admitted Togwell.

“If I had to go for the tackle again I would, there is no doubt about that for me. It is still harsh; we did appeal it but they rejected it. It’s good to be back playing and pushing this team forward to where we want to be.”
