Wingate & Finchley failed to take full advantage of a raft of postponements in the Isthmian Premier Division on Saturday as they played out a goalless draw against Leatherhead.

In one of just four fixtures to go ahead due to heavy rainfall, the Blues drew a blank and thus missed the opportunity to sneak into the play-off places on goal difference.

And with Dulwich Hamlet, Metropolitan Police, Leiston and East Thurrock United – all above Danny Nielsen and Dave Norman’s side – only drawing, it was an excellent chance passed up.

The Blues almost took the lead after a couple of minutes when Rob Laney ran onto Mark Goodman’s pass but after rounding the Leatherhead goalkeeper, Laney could not convert.

And Wingate came close once more just a handful of minutes later as Tommy Tejan-Sie crossed teasingly for Scott Shulton, who saw his effort cleared off the line by defender Joe Bruce.

Leatherhead could have taken a surprise lead when former Tottenham Hotspur attacker Kiernan Hughes-Mason picked out Mark Nwokeji in the penalty area but his low shot was cleared away for a corner.

From the resulting set piece Vasileios Karagiannis contrived to fire narrowly wide from a good position.

Wingate continued to carve out chances for fun after the break, with Ola Sogbanmu dragging wide following a powerful run and Laney shooting tamely into the arms of Louis Wells.

Sogbanmu saw yet another chance blocked by Wells, whilst Wingate stopper Bobby Smith had to be alert in order to prevent Hughes-Mason and Richard Avery breaking the deadlock.

David Knight forced Wells into another stop before Laney and substitute Jack Read were left head in hands after being thwarted.

Wingate captain Marc Weatherstone said: “It was quite disappointing.

“We had a great defensive shape but it was one of those games where it didn’t go for us going forward.

“I feel its two points dropped rather than a point gained, but it was another clean sheet and we bounced back from Wednesday night (a 2-1 defeat at Cray Valley in the London County Cup).”

Next up for the Blues is a trip to Peacehaven & Telscombe on Saturday.

Hendon’s trip to Margate on Saturday was one of a spate of postponements but with landlords Harrow Borough also at a loose end, the Greens won a friendly at Silver Jubilee Park 6-0.

Goals from Aaron Morgan (3), Casey Maclaren (2) and Lee O’Leary sealed the win for the Greens, who are at home to Witham Town on Saturday.

Gary McCann’s side also saw Monday’s tussle with Canvey Island postponed following a pitch inspection.

In Spartan South Midlands Division One, Edgware Town recovered from going 2-0 down after three minutes to lose 4-3 against Buckingham Athletic.

A Bilal Butt penalty was added to by an own goal and an effort from former player turned player-assistant Fabio Valenti on his first start but it was not enough to mount a comeback.
