Interim head coach Andrew Henderson insists effort alone will not be enough for London Broncos, who were beaten 18-16 by Whitehaven in the Kingstone Press Championship on Sunday.
Hosts Whitehaven led 6-4 in a closely-contested first half, with Broncos' solo try coming from Iliess Macani.
But Whitehaven took an 18-4 lead in the second half. And just as the game looked to be getting away from London, scores from Rhys Williams and Brad Dwyer brought the visitors back within two points.
Speaking to the club website, Henderson said: "At 18-4 down we showed a lot of character to get ourselves back into a position to win the game so I can credit the players a little bit for that.
"We were under the pump and we’d done so much defensive work in the first half so to put ourselves in a position to win it was a great effort but again effort isn’t always enough."
He added: "We’ve got to be better with the ball, more clinical with our decision making and our execution and hopefully we’re not in that position again.
"It’s very disappointing for the team and the club and I’m hoping the players will respond in a more positive manor this week in the Challenge Cup (at Leigh Centurions) on Friday."
