Wingate & Finchley tumbled out of the Isthmian Premier Division play-off places and down to eighth on Saturday following a 1-0 loss against Billericay Town.

Richard Halle struck the winner from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining after the Blues had controlled proceedings.

Forward Rob Laney went close early on when he rounded goalkeeper Joe Wright but saw his shot blocked. Ola Sogbanmu should have done better following an intricate build-up, whilst Laney and Tommy Tejan-Sie were also unable to find a way past Billericay stopper Wright.

Speaking after, Laney commented: “I think we dominated most of the game and definitely deserved something out of it. Our defence was on form today, we soaked up everything they threw at us.

"I can’t remember [goalkeeper] Bobby (Smith) having to make many saves but we could have been better in the final third.”

Wingate travel to big-spending Margate on Saturday looking to return to winning ways.
