Barnet boss Martin Allen felt his side played well but could have done more to satisfy his “OCD” nature in the 5-0 demolition of Welling United.

The Bees returned to the Conference summit by thrashing the ten-man Wings at The Hive, with goals from Mauro Vilhete, John Akinde (2), Michael Gash and Luisma Villa enough to leapfrog Bristol Rovers by a point.

However, Allen was not completely satisfied with his side’s display, despite preventing Welling from having a shot on target.

He said: “I thought we played quite well, I did not think we played great. We took the chances when they came our way and as with any win, it is still three points on the board – you only get three points whether you win 1-0 or 5-0.

“It was a good effort on our players’ part and I am really pleased with them,” he added.

Asked what the Bees could have done better, Allen replied: “[We could have] scored more goals and passed the ball better.

“But I am OCD and right from day one in pre-season I have demanded more and better from each individual; in training, in the gym and the way they conduct themselves.

“We are always looking for more and to get better and I told them today I was very proud of them and pleased with them.”

Victory also marked Barnet’s first clean sheet in eight Conference fixtures and Allen lauded his side’s rearguard action.

“The clean sheet is particularly pleasing for all of the players because they all have to defend and work hard when we don’t have the ball,” he explained.

“It is funny because in the first hour against Forest Green Rovers we actually played really well but because they scored two goals in a short space of time it knocked the players sideways and they could not recover in that game. But we played quite well for an hour in the match and were unfortunate not to go further ahead.”

Allen continued: “The last two away games were always going to be a testing time because it was a big week with Eastleigh and Halifax away and this game here. Three games in a week, a lot of travelling and hard to play on that pitch on Tuesday night. Thankfully we have got a very resilient, determined and focused group.”

It was Vilhete who set the Bees on their way with an excellent solo goal after 17 minutes and Allen was effusive in his praise of the Portuguese utility man.

He enthused: “Mauro has played in those two away games, both tough games, and has done extremely well. I thought it was the right thing to do to play him again today; he has earned his place and he scored a fantastic goal.

“He did superb, Mauro. Going into those two away games we had a lot of resilience and we really needed everybody to go up another level, not just attacking wise but defensively and to do a job within the structure of the team.

“Mauro has been a significant part in keeping clean sheets and not getting beaten, which obviously at any football team is your priority.”
