Player-coach Graham Stack felt Barnet’s performance was at Alfreton Town on Saturday was not good enough but was adamant the Bees could not and would not blame anyone but themselves for dropping two points.

A first-half Curtis Weston goal had put Martin Allen’s side 1-0 up at North Street and Barnet were on the verge of moving three points clear of Bristol Rovers at the Conference summit with victory until former Reds striker John Akinde tripped Dan Bradley – briefly a Bee – inside the penalty area.

Defender Bradley Wood converted the resulting spot kick to deny Barnet an important victory in north Derbyshire.

Stack was relatively untroubled throughout the contest, only facing one other attempt on target, but speaking afterwards expressed his belief the performance had not matched the levels expected.

He stated: “I do not think it was a good performance – I have got to be honest with you – the first half especially [we were not good enough]. We were better in the second half but it is just all-round disappointment.

“The first-half performance was under-par. We were much better in the second half – we should have put the game to bed, we had enough chances to win the game. We failed to defend the long throw into our box which we had defended all game. It was a rash challenge in the box and we have paid the penalty,” he added.

Nick Law’s Alfreton only had two attempts on target during the match and only mustered four shots in total as Barnet’s backline enjoyed one of their quietest 90 minutes of the season.

“We looked very comfortable and that is us not playing well,” Stack enthused. “We dominated the second half. In chances we were well on top and probably in possession as well. To go in at half-time 1-0 up having not played well, I think we were fortunate.

“The conditions weren’t ideal for us – or for them – it was windy out there and it was not easy. But it is a point away from home. There are not many positives at the minute because we are hurting. But we have been there before with Halifax away and we bounced back and got a win at home to Welling. We need to do the same.”

The former Arsenal gloveman added: “Obviously we are disappointed, there are some gutted lads in there – including me – but we can’t afford to sit back and talking about ‘what if’ or blaming people. We have never blamed anyone within the group. It is us collectively and we should have got over the line today.”
