Finchley could not follow up last weekend’s win over Teddington as Hampstead were victorious by three wickets in Middlesex League Division One on Saturday.

Hosts Hampstead elected to send their opponents into bat first and the visitors made a stuttering start, losing two wickets for just ten runs early on.

However, opener Fred Daeche-Marshall smashed ten fours to reach a total of 59, going some way to steadying the ship.

There were healthy knocks too for Majed Ali (21) and Niraj Jadav (28) before Jamie Powe and Muhammed Arshad hit 38 and 35 respectively further down the order.

Sunil Tailor made an unbeaten 19 to cap off a decent innings for Finchley as they put up 234 all out from 57.5 overs.

But Hampstead responded magnificently as number three Jamie Gibson smashed his way to a ton, scoring 101 from 82 balls.

Liam Hughes was close to a half-century on 47 and only Finchley’s Daniel Moreton got more than just a single wicket, finishing with two for 64 with the ball.

The unbeaten partnership of Archie Fellowes (27) and Robert Jones, who faced only three balls, got Hampstead over the line as they reached 238 for seven in 42.3 overs.

Stanmore were also beaten – despite a knock of 61 from Rishi Pandya – going down by a whopping 140 runs against North Middlesex elsewhere in Division One.

Batting first, North Middlesex reached 274 for nine thanks to 99 from Evan Flowers and good contributions from Tom Nicoll (46) and Joe Hewton (47) too.

And it would have been more had it not been for Mukesh Bhatt, who returned figures of five for 94 from his spell with the ball.

Steven Reingold (two for 34), Camika Karunaratne (one for 33) and Marc Reingold (one for 35) snared the other wickets.

But at the crease themselves, Stanmore slipped up as only Rishi Pandya (61) and Grant Reingold (41) could muster more than ten runs.

North Middlesex duo Joel Hughes and Sam Webber were clinical as they took five for 50 and three for 31 respectively to end Stanmore’s innings on 134 all out after 48.1 overs.

Potters Bar were beaten by the rain as their match against Bishop’s Stortford in Saracens Herts League Premier Division was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

However, Totteridge Millhillians managed to beat the weather as they drew with West Herts in the Championship.

Totteridge batted first after losing the toss and made it to 176 all out in their 50, a score which always looked short.

Opening batsmen Hayden Butterworth (62) set the tone and captain Steve Selwood (22) and Chris Mason (38) added to the total.

West Herts started the chase with Alastair Lewis hitting 34 and Matthew Smith (42) soon followed as the hosts recorded 154 for nine to hold out resiliently for a draw.

There was disappointment again for bottom-of-the-league Old Finchleians as St. Margaretsbury trounced them by eight wickets in Division One.

The away side removed Old Finchleians for a miserable total of 97 and after only 37.3 overs as they set about finishing the game quickly.

That they did, as the target of 98 was reached after just over 20 overs, with only two men falling.

Old Elizabethans saw their Division Three A fixture with Baldock postponed due to the rain, whilst Mill Hill Village’s Division Six B tussle with Boxmoor was also lost to the weather.

In the Middlesex County Knockout Cup, Finchley eased into the next round with a one-wicket win over Enfield.

Batting first, Finchley put up a total of 243 for nine from their 45 overs before removing the home side for just 167 to secure their passage into the quarter-finals.

Stanmore also progressed – beating Southgate – and will now face Wembley for a place in the semi-finals.
