Barnet boss Martin Allen felt his side deserved their 3-1 win over Championship new-boys MK Dons but insists he is no closer to knowing the XI which will face Leyton Orient in their League Two opener.

The Bees opened the scoring after just 20 seconds as Michael Gash turned over possession from the Dons’ kick-off and slipped in John Akinde to score the first of his three goals.

Simon Church levelled from the penalty spot almost immediately, before Akinde netted twice more in the first half to give Barnet a deserved win over Karl Robinson’s men.

And speaking afterwards the Bees head coach was pleased with his side’s display as they claimed a second-tier scalp.

“It was a good workout,” said Allen. “They started very well and were very sharp – as you would expect from a Championship club.

“We found it very difficult to get close to them for the first 15 minutes but then after that I think we settled into our way of playing and I think we fully deserved to win to be honest.”

He continued: “We have got a good squad of players and I promised them all that if they all worked hard and did their bit they would all play.

“I am convinced all of them can play in a winning team in this division. They have shown it today and after the good performance on Tuesday against Peterborough, now everybody has had a good run out and done well.”

Asked if he was any closer to deciding who would take to the field on the opening day of the season against Leyton Orient in a fortnight’s time, Allen was typically coy in his response.

“They can all play, we have seen that,” he mused. “It looks like Kevin Lisbie is up to speed now – that was a very sharp performance he put on.

"Batty (Shaun Batt) we are just looking after him a little bit because we don’t want him to get any injuries. He had done a lot of work in training so we are taking it a step at a time rather than two steps forward, two steps back. We just have to keep nudging him along.

“I know all these players are going to play in that first week anyway because we have got three games anyway. They have all been brought here to play, not just hang around and doss around.

“The answer to your question is, no, not really. I won’t decide that until Thursday morning.”
