Barnet boss Martin Allen says he is proud to be the manager who will lead the Bees in their first Football League match at The Hive when Wycombe Wanderers visit tomorrow (kick-off 3pm).

The Bees moved to Edgware in 2013 after spending 106 years at Underhill. Following two seasons in the Conference, Barnet will mark their return to the Football League with a visit from the Chairboys.

Ironically, Wanderers were also the last visitors to Underhill in 2013.

On that day Barnet won 1-0 thanks to Jake Hyde's effort nine minutes before the end. Graham Stack then saved a last-gasp penalty from Joel Grant to take the Bees' relegation battle to the final day at Northampton Town.

Allen said: "It’s an amazing feeling, creating history. This is an historic game for this football club; the first Football League match ever to be played at The Hive.

“It’s very special and I’m very proud to be the manager.

“All the players that were here with me when I started about 16 months ago have worked so hard.

“For them to have come this far in such a short space of time together, and now to see them playing in the Football League, it’s a great feeling and I am very proud of them all.”

Allen has often praised the work of Blues boss Gareth Ainsworth after he took unfancied Wycombe to the League Two Play-Off Final last season, only losing out on penalties to Southend United at Wembley.

Previewing Saturday's meeting between the two sides, Allen again took the opportunity to laud the former Queens Park Rangers and Wimbledon winger for his achievements with the Buckinghamshire club.

He said: “Gareth Ainsworth’s got a really good team together. He’s done very well in the loan market – he only worked with 18 players last season.

“I think they were top of the league for most of the season, so they are a benchmark for where we’ve got to get to as a club, as a team, as a squad and as a fan base – their supporters were full of energy last year.

“I went to a few of their games because I thought we’d be playing them this season.

“So all in all, it’s a historic game, our first Football League match, against an excellent team.

“I would also expect quite a big crowd for what is a local derby.”

Striker Michael Gash will undergo a late fitness test after receiving a blow to the head which required stitches during Tuesday's League Cup win at Millwall.

The powerful forward finished the game, though, and is expected to feature. Fellow attackers Kevin Lisbie (hamstring) and Shaun Batt (calf) could miss out, however.

For Wycombe, centre-back Aaron Pierre fit again and could come into the side after missing their League Cup clash with Fulham.

Midfielder Max Kretzschmar is 'touch and go' and the long-serving Matt Bloomfield has recovered from an illness which meant he missed the Blues' 3-0 win over York City on the opening day of the season.

Ainsworth says he is expecting more than just a physical challenge when the Chairboys visit The Hive.

He said: “Martin Allen get his teams up for games and we’re expecting nothing less than a fight, but they also play some decent stuff and we’ve got to be wary that it’s not just going to be a scrap that people might assume when you play a Martin Allen team.

“We’re not just going there thinking that if we win the fight we win the game, because it won’t work like that. We’re going to have to play our game as well and get the ball passed around.

“It’s going to be a good test. They are on the up. They had a good win at Millwall in the cup and their tails will be up. But I’m really pleased with our performances so far and we are feeling confident."

Ainsworth knows all about Barnet after last season's FA Cup first-round encounter. John Akinde put the Bees after just three minutes before Paul Hayes equalised from the penalty spot.

Former Wycombe loanee Sam Togwell was sent off for a two-footed challenge seconds before half-time and the Blues capitalised to score twice after the restart. Andy Yiadom was then dismissed at the death to cap a miserable day for Barnet.
