Saracens’ Jamie George made his England debut as the Red Rose were beaten 25-20 by France in Paris on Saturday evening, leaving head coach Stuart Lancaster with more questions than answers ahead of next month’s World Cup.

George, 24, was one of three members of the Wolf Pack involved at the Stade de France as England were comfortably beaten by the French, despite a late rally.

With just eight days until coaches must name their final 31-man squad for the tournament, Lancaster was able to cast his eye over hooker George, Billy and Mako Vunipola.

England kick off their World Cup campaign against Fiji on September 18 and on this evidence there is still much work to be done.

Frederic Michalak kicked France into a 15-6 half-time lead with Sale's George Ford replying with two penalties for the visitors.

Yoann Huget went over in the second half and with the extras added, England had looked down and out.

However, replacement Danny Cipriani and Jonathan Joseph went over late on to at least make the scoreboard read as if it had been a close contest.

England's final warm-up fixture is against Ireland at Twickenham on September 5.
