Martin Allen says he predicted Barnet’s shock win at Oxford United this afternoon but admitted the Bees had some luck in picking up their first away league win, 3-2 at the Kassam Stadium.

Before this week Barnet had failed to gain a single point on the road in League Two – the worst record in the Football League and Premier League.

But on Tuesday they ended that hoodoo with a 1-1 draw at Hartlepool United. And today they went one better, ending the U’s unbeaten home record thanks to a five-minute blitz from Curtis Weston, John Akinde and Josh Clarke.

Speaking afterwards a delighted Allen said: “I came here two weeks ago to see them play Swindon Town (in the Football League Trophy) and in 65th minute my mate, who is an Oxford supporter, nudged me in the ribs and asked: ‘What are you going to do against this and how are you going to stop them?’

"I just smiled and said: ‘We will come here and win, without a shadow of doubt’. We put a plan together and a team together to play it.

“I think it’s fair to say they had a big game on Tuesday night where they beat Plymouth Argyle here. That was probably their big game of the week and seeing ‘two bob Barnet’ coming to play here, for the crowd and players, was not too stimulating.

“I just thought it was the right time to come here and play them.

“We deserved to win and there were two absolute stone-banker penalties that I couldn’t believe.

“One where the geezer had his hand up above his head and it hit his hand. The referee said it did hit his hand above his head but it’s not a penalty. If the ball hits your hands and the ball is up by your shoulder it is a penalty.”

He added: “That night against Swindon this place was absolutely rocking. It reminded me of the old days at the Manor Ground. I’ve never known this gaff like it.

“To come here with Barnet and beat them here is a credit to all the players and a credit to all the supporters. It’s a good day out for us.”

The Bees fell behind to a Liam Sercombe goal after 14 minutes but thanks to three strikes in quick succession found themselves 3-1 up after half an hour.

Sercombe halved the deficit before very nearly levelling seconds before the referee’s whistle brought a breathless first half to an end.

“We had a bit of luck,” admitted Allen. “The geezer (Liam Sercombe) just before half time hit the inside of the post and it rolled along the goal line.

“How many times have we hit the post and the ball’s rolled along the goal-line or hit the crossbar or the goalkeeper has made world class saves against us this season?”

But despite seeing the Bees put a stop to their poor form away from The Hive, Allen insists the emphasis is now on further improvement.

He said: “We’ve got to get better. It isn’t good enough to accept where we are now. This is a long season, we’ve got to take the game and move onto the next one and get better all round.

“We’ve got to demand more from each other, the staff, the players and myself. Hopefully over time, with me as manager, it gets better.”
