Gary McCann refused to get carried away by Hendon’s 3-0 win over Farnborough Town on Monday and insisted there is still an enormous amount of work still to be done.

The win – just the Greens’ seventh in the Isthmian Premier Division – means Hendon now have a seven-point buffer between themselves and the relegation zone.

However, Brentwood Town, directly below them in 21st place, have six games in hand on McCann’s men and the three sides below them all have at least three games in hand too.

Russell Short gave Hendon the lead after 25 minutes before debutant Ismael Ehui doubled up for the hosts on the stroke of half time.

The third was an own goal from Farnborough’s Darryl Slaw. Things got worse for the Hampshire side when Gary MacDonald picked up two bookings for dissent separated by just a few seconds.

Reflecting on the win, McCann said: “Make no mistake, I am fully aware that there is still an enormous amount of work needed. But there were very good signs.

“We could have won by far more than 3-0, but you can only beat what is put in front of you.

“I thought the balance of the team was much better, the mix of youth and experience was better and the younger players will learn a lot. I don’t think there was a bad performance from anyone in the 14.

“Mark Kirby may have had his best game for us so far, Ismael Ehui and Dean Cracknell brought an immediate energy up front and Finnbar Robins and Ryan Gondoh were very hard to stop.

“Wesley Fonguck just improves with every game. Even Joe Wright, who had almost nothing to do all night, dealt with everything that came his way.”

McCann bolstered his squad ahead of the game with the dual registration signings of Ehui from Hayes & Yeading United and Carl McCluskey from Edgware Town. The winger is now in his second spell at Earlsmead.

Barnet striker Ryan Gondoh joined on loan last Friday and McCann is pleased with the attacking options he has available to him after seeing Leon Smith and Aaron Morgan depart.

He said: “There were so many players who are not quite familiar with each other’s playing styles and strengths, this can only get better.

Add in Sam Murphy and Kezie Ibe to Ehui, Robins, Gondoh, Ben Pattie, Carl McCluskey and Cracknell and we will have a number of attacking options.”

Hendon were beaten 3-1 at Billericay Town on Saturday.

Joe Ellul and Teddie Nesbit put the Blues into a 2-0 lead by the hour mark before Tony Taggart got one back for Hendon with five minutes remaining.

Any hopes of a comeback were short-lived, though, as Onome Sodje netted a third for the Essex outfit two minutes later.

Reflecting on the loss, McCann said: "I cannot fault the effort, energy and commitment from my players.

"They are all pulling in the same direction and we are still trying to do things the right way.

"The bottom line is that their experience and know-how was more effective that our youth and they used this to get the points."

Next up for Hendon is a home clash against Leiston on Saturday.

The Greens announced on Friday winger Andre Da Costa has left.
