Barnet head coach Martin Allen wants his side to kick on after they secured their place in League Two for another season on Monday.

John Akinde’s last gasp penalty snatched a dramatic 2-1 win for the Bees over Luton which means it is now mathematically impossible for them to be relegated.

With a season long objective now ticked off, Allen wants to see his side make the most of their seven remaining league matches.

“I want us to win as many games and get as many points on the board as possible. We are on 51 points now and I want us to get into the mid-sixties,” Allen said.

“If we can do that it would be fantastic. To get into the mid-sixties for points in our first year back in League Two would be a great achievement for the club.”

Barnet’s status as a League Two side has not really been in doubt for some time now but the contrast to previous season’s in English football’s fourth tier is notable.

From 2009 to 2012 they finished 21stand 22nd on two occasions before finally succumbing to relegation to the Conference in 2013.

This history makes Barnet’s current position all the more pleasing for Allen and he was full of praise for a squad he feels has coped well with the various challenges thrown at them.

“The club has regularly had to fight relegation on the final day of the season in the past and I thought we were safe a few weeks ago. It is great for the players and for the supporters,” Allen said.

“All the credit has to go to the players. We have had to deal with a lot of injuries this season which has been a big concern.

“We went about three months without a second centre forward and we have still managed to achieve safety.

“The players have worked hard on the training pitch, in the gym and on match days. Their dedication and attitude has really pleased me.”

The footballing world rarely stands still and Barnet will be involved in a similar battle next season as they look to cement their place in League Two.

Allen is aware of the challenges the squad will face and has already begun to work on plans for next term.

“I am the same as everyone else connected to the club and I am looking for the next part of the jigsaw. That involves player recruitment and getting the club ready for next season,” Allen explained.

“I am probably getting 20 phone calls a day from different agents who want their players to come to Barnet.

“We have got to bring in some new players to join the group. It doesn’t need wholesale changes though, the results have shown that over the last couple of months.”
