Gary Waddock has left his role as assistant first team coach at Barnet to join Aldershot Town as manager.

The 54-year-old joins the National League side on a rolling contract in what will be his second spell at the club.

He led the Shots into the Football League in 2008 with a then record points total of 101 before leaving the club in 2009.

In a statement on the Barnet website head coach Martin Allen wrote: “He’s been a real help to me, so I’m grateful to Gary. I think he will be very well suited to managing Aldershot – a club that he has done well at, and one that is near to his house.

“He’s grateful to everyone for all the backing and support, and some great times we have had this season.

“So from me personally it’s a big thank you to Gary, and I wish him the very best of luck next season at Aldershot.”

Waddock’s managerial career started at QPR before having spells at Wycombe Wanderers, Oxford United and Portsmouth.

He replaces Barry Smith, who led Aldershot to a 15th placed league finish this season, in the hot-seat at the Recreation Ground.

"It's a situation I never thought I'd be in, but I'm delighted to be here," Waddock told Aldershot's website.

"I've missed the people here and I've missed the supporters. The atmosphere they created at home games was amazing and I loved that.

"We have to be able to give them something to cheer about and we're going to try our best to get this place rocking again."
