Two teenage swimmers from Barnet Copthall have been recognised by their respective countries for outstanding performances in the pool.

Following Olympic trials in Glasgow, breaststroke specialist Yaron Gerber, 17, has been selected for the England 2020 development squad to compete in the French Open Championships in July.

Fellow squad member, 13-year-old Gaurika Singh, who will travel to Rio to compete in the 100m backstroke at the Olympic Games, was awarded a prestigious national medal by her home country of Nepal.

Singh was awarded the Jana Sew Shree Man Padawi medal primarily for her performance at this year’s South Asian Games in Guwahati, India where she scooped one silver and three bronze medals, becoming the first swimmer to win multiple medals in one competition for Nepal.

Gerber heads a team of 19 Barnet Copthall swimmers who have made the cut to compete in the prestigious English and British competitions in July and August.

The club’s head doach Rhys Gormley: “It’s been a great season for the swimming club with some stand out performances from our young swimmers.

“We’re looking forward to a summer of competitions, including nationals and of course representation at the Olympic Games in Rio.”
