Wingate and Finchley's safety net in the Ryman Premier League play-off places is down to four points after a surprise 1-0 reverse at Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.

Their trip to the south coast ended in disappointment with Joe Taylor's prodded finish the difference, and it could have been worse but for a fine goalkeeping performance from Shane Gore.

The goal which would eventually prove the winner arrived only 12 minutes in, when Jordan Wright's header was saved by Gore, who also turned Sam Beale's follow-up away, but could do nothing when Taylor scored from the hosts' third bite of the cherry.

More chances came and went for Folkestone while Reece Beckles-Richards and Luke Ifil were both off target for the Blues before half-time.

They nearly found an equaliser after the break when Spencer McCall's header was expertly saved by Tim Roberts.

Wingate had late chances to level the scores but were deservedly beaten after a below-par first half, which should have seen the hosts out of sight.

Wingate and Finchley: Gore, Ifil, Adams, Williams, Cronin, Rifat, Laney (Dawkins 80), McCall, Pattie (Obafemi 45), Beckles-Richards, Tejan-Sie.

Not used: Sharpe, Wales, Vanderhyde.
