Wingate and Finchley threw aside the two divisions separating them from Woking on Saturday to draw 1-1 with the Surrey side at the Maurice Reback Stadium.

The Cards were dealt a blow when Reece Beckles levelled up for the hosts 11 minutes from time, when Woking goalkeeper Luke Sheldrick diverted his shot into his own net.

A lapse in concentration from Sean Cronin had given Woking the chance to take an early lead through Inih Effiong just inside 20 minutes.

But Wingate, on the back of a 7-1 thrashing by Boreham Wood the previous week, battled back and were more than worthy of a draw with their National League opponents.

New signing Marc Charles-Smith nearly put them ahead as early as the third minute, but his header from Beckles' cross was saved by Nathan Baxter.

Effiong scored the opener with the first opportunity of note, taking advantage of Cronin's misjudgement to fire beyond Shane Gore and put the visitors ahead.

Wingate looked to hit back straight away but Beckles' cross was laid back to Luke Ifil, only for him to miscue and miss the opportunity.

Beckles was looking dangerous and saw a 20-yard effort fly just over before the break, as Wingate went in at the interval unlucky to be behind.

Woking's build-up play had been their forte in the first half and it continued in the second, but a cutting edge eluded them as James Demetriou fired well over from the edge of the area.

Beckles again chanced his arm with another effort from Kunlie Otudeko's ball, but saw it saved, and Joe Sharpe nearly did the unthinkable, in coming close from two direct corners, only to see both cleared off the line.

The fine deliveries continued from dead balls and Cronin headed another of Sharpe's corners just wide, before Woking missed a golden chance to double their lead when former Watford player Bobson Bawling found Demetriou, but, having left his shooting boots at home, he blazed over.

Wingate instead found the next goal, and a crucial equaliser, with 11 minutes remaining. Beckles showed good footwork and pace to get away down the right before firing in a rocket of a shot, which trialist goalkeeper Sheldrick could only palm into his own net.
