Wingate and Finchley ruthlessly ended Folkestone Invicta's eight-game winning streak with a 2-1 win at the Maurice Rebak Stadium on Saturday.

The Wings got a much-needed win of their own to rise to ninth in the Bostik Premier League, and went ahead early on through Afolabi Obafemi's flick only four minutes in.

Marc Charles-Smith netted a second after the break, with the hosts again coming out quickly and doubling their advantage with seven minutes of the half gone.

An own goal from Claudiu Vilcu gave Folkestone hope, but the defender was spared a nightmare debut as Wingate held on for victory.

Wingate opened the scoring with the first whistle barely sounded, when Charles-Smith held the ball up for Rob Laney, and his cross was tucked home at the near post by Obafemi.

Shane Gore made a smart, but routine save to keep out a low drive before Obafemi shot over the crossbar, and Sean Cronin saw an effort parried away.

It should have been more than 1-0 at the break, but seven minutes after the restart it was.

Quentin Monville raced through on goal before he found his path blocked, but it was soon two as a goalmouth scramble allowed Charles-Smith to finish smartly in the corner.

Folkstone finally woke up and missed a trio of chances before they were handed a lifeline by Vilcu's own goal from a corner, but the hosts had only to ride out one more chance to hold on.

Wingate: Gore, Williams, Mavila, Vilcu, Cronin, Rifat, Ifil, Laney, Charles-Smith, Obafemi (Pattie 74), Monville (Eales 84).
