Barnet Copthall Swimming Club may have to invest in a new trophy cabinet after a large haul at the Middlesex County Championships.

The North London club, one of 17 taking part in the competition, scooped a total of seven trophies in the event in addition to a certificate for breaking a county record and 112 medals (54 golds, 32 silvers and 26 bronzes).

Leading the way were Ellie Chadwick and Thomas Flynn who each received two trophies, including the Junior Wilkinson Sword award in the 11 years and under girls and boys categories respectively.

The duo also received trophies for the most number of points awarded by swimming’s governing body, FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation).

Another individual trophy was awarded to 14-year-old Fleur Lewis for breaking the county record for her time in the 200m butterfly which she achieved in becoming the national junior champion at the Commonwealth Games trials in December.

Barnet Copthall was also awarded trophies for top women’s club and top men’s club in the Middlesex County swimming competition.

Head coach Rhys Gormley said: “This was a successful start to this season’s swimming from both the junior and senior sections at Barnet Copthall.

“This should set us up for the rest of the year well. The focus now is qualifying for the British and English Championships which will be held in Sheffield in July.”
