Andrew 'Beef' Johnston will compete at the US Open after tying for victory at Walton Heath.

The North Middlesex Golf Club professional finished alongside James Morrison on 10 under-par in the US Open International qualifier and will take his place in the field in New York on Thursday, June 14.

Johnston carded rounds of 65 and 69, while Morrison repeated his opening round 67 yesterday to secure himself a spot.

Fresh from competing in the Italian Open, Johnston told the European Tour website: “It’s a tough day, after coming in late from Italy last night. I got in late and didn’t much sleep, and then two rounds today. It’s tough but it’s been a good day.

“It is difficult, but you have to just get out there and play and get yourself around the fact that you’re not going to get much sleep. That’s the kind of mindset you’ve got to get into.

“I played lovely early on and then I started nicely in my second round too, but then I scrambled hard on the back nine coming in, but I’ve done enough so it’s good.

“The last event I played in New York area was the US PGA Championship at Baltusrol and that was wild. So I’m expecting it’s going to be loud and it’ll be good fun. I haven’t played there before but I’ve heard some really good things about it so I’m really looking forward to playing there.”

Some big names fell short in Surrey and both Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington were left wanting as they finished outside the top 14 qualifying spots.

Dane Thorbjorn Olesen backed up victory at the Italian Open to claim a spot at Shinnecock Hills, with a host of other Brits also making the grade.

Richie Ramsay was just a shot off the front, tying for third with Matthew Southgate.

Scott Gregory, Tom Lewis and Matthew Wallace were also successful in qualifying.
