Anthony Joshua’s commitment to fighting in Britain shows no sign of letting up after it was confirmed his next two bouts will take place at Wembley Stadium.

Watford’s heavyweight champion of the world will defend his IBF, WBA, WBO and IBO titles under the stadium’s famous arch on Saturday, September 22 before returning to the venue on Saturday, April 23.

Wembley has proven a happy hunting ground for Joshua in the past, after he downed Wladimir Klitschko in front of a post-war record 90,000 strong crowd at the stadium last year.

Since then the 28-year-old has fought twice at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, beating Carlos Takam and unifying the WBO crown against Joseph Parker, but Joshua is pleased the be back in London for his next engagements.

“I am returning to Wembley after two mega fights in Cardiff,” Joshua said. “I want to thank the supporters from Wales and Great Britain and also the people of London for patiently awaiting my return.

“Being north London born and raised, it is in my blood. The opportunity to fight in such an iconic stadium is normally a once in a career opportunity, so to be given the chance to fight there again is amazing. Wembley just added a fourth lion to the den.”

For Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn, the upcoming fights represent a chance to once again reward a loyal UK fan base with what he hopes will be two more historic nights.

“I don’t think anyone will ever forget that night on April 29 against Klitschko and we plan to bring two more dramatic events to Wembley Stadium in September and April,” Hearn said “I’m extremely proud to get the opportunity to promote two more shows at the national stadium and delighted for British fight fans that Anthony has made this commitment to them.”

The opponent for Joshua’s September fight is due to be announced next week, Hearn confirmed, while the April outing could well see more records smashed.

Hearn revealed capacity in September will be 90,000 and he expects that to be increased to 100,000 for the April showpiece.

With a mammoth 400,000 tickets expected to be sold across five World title fights after his next two bouts, it is conceivable Joshua could go on to become the first boxer ever to sell one million live tickets.

Wembley Stadium’s commercial manager James Taylor says having fights on the scale with which Joshua generates is exactly the sort of event the venue should be proud to host.

He said: “Wembley Stadium is home of the biggest and best sporting events and it is fitting that one of the world’s leading sports stars returns to fight under the iconic arch.

“AJ’s last appearance at the national stadium was a record-breaking event which will be remembered as one of the highlights in the venue’s history.

“We look forward to welcoming Anthony and his thousands of fans back to Wembley for two huge fights.”
