"The best team won."
That was the honest verdict of Barnet manager Paul Fairclough after he watched the Bees lose 3-1 at home to Chesterfield in their League Two opener this afternoon.
Fairclough said it was a game of mistakes.
"I thought Santa Claus was going to run on to the pitch at any stage. We gifted them three goals and they gifted us our goal. There were lots of errors from both sides."
Though Barnet could have scored late on, they were generally outplayed.
"You could say their keeper ended up being the hero in the second half, but Lee Harrison also made two fantastic saves in the first half. Overall, they worked harder than us. They took the initiative and got back into the game. We have to match their work ethic in future games."
But Fairclough said he could still draw some positives from the game, and insisted his team would learn from it.
"It was disappointing to start the season like this, but every club playing today wanted to start the season well. We have lost the battle, but not the war."
