Barnet manager Paul Fairclough cut a dejected figure after the 3-1 defeat at home to Macclesfield.
The Silkmen won the points with two late goals after the Bees had dominated the second half.
Fairclough said: "Football can be a cruel game. It was cruel to Barnet this afternoon. I'm proud of the commitment and passion shown by the players. They were determined to turn things round.
"The first half was full of anxiety and tension, but in the second we were so determined to get something out of the game. I can't believe we haven't taken all three points."
The Bees squandered a whole host of chances after the interval, with Albert Adomah seeing a gilt-edged opportunity saved moments before the Silkmen struck their second.
Fairclough said: "They (Macclesfield) went up the other end and scored. What a save it was from their goalkeeper."
He added: "I believe Macclesfield would have settled for the draw. We were going flat out for the win and you pay the price at this level."
