Brenford 1 Barnet 0 - The morning after report

Brentford boss Andy Scott recently said his Bees were the best team in League Two.

And their position at the top suggests he is probably right.

But, if Brentford are the best, Barnet boss Ian Hendon can take heart from the fact that his charges are not that far behind them.

The Barnet Bees more than matched their hosts in a thrilling contest at Griffin Park and you have to wonder how they came away with nothing to show for their efforts.

Hendon said: "The result will say 1-0, but I'm really glad there were 800 Barnet fans to see this. Their manager said they were the best team in the league, but we've come away having matched them. I don't think many teams have done that to Brentford this season."

Barnet bombarded the home goal, particularly in the second half, but could not find a way through. The fact that defender Ismail Yakubu came close on three occasions suggests just how many efforts the visitors had on the home goal.

Brentford took just eight minutes to score what turned out to be the winner, Marcus Bean rising at the near post to head home a Kevin O'Connor corner.

Paul Furlong came the closest to an equaliser in the first half, his superb curling effort from the edge of the box striking the post.

After the break, Barnet pushed everyone forward, with almost every player in the team having a go at some point. It made for a cracking contest, with Brentford looking to wrap it up on the break, something sub Sam Williams failed to do when put through in the final minute.

That would have been cruel on Hendon's troops. Indeed, most will pick up a newspaper and see that Barnet lost 1-0, but that does not tell even half the story.
